Velodrome Muncie

The Muncie Velodrome, the first paved midget speedway in Indiana, which opened in 1940, was located at the intersection of Burlington and Willard. The venue could accommodate up to 8,000 spectators and hosted races on Fridays. The Mutual Racing Association was a key sponsor of these events, helping to bring thrilling competitions to the local community, with racers from many surrounding states.

At this speedway, the main event often featured a 25-lap race in the so-called “midget” class of small race cars,, showcasing the skill and speed of the drivers.In August 1940, the speedway hosted a 50-lap national championship, marking a significant event in its history. However, the onset of World War II led to the closure of the speedway in 1942, as resources and attention shifted towards the war effort. It briefly reopened from 1946 to 1948, but after that, it ceased operations as a racing and sporting venue.Today, the site that once echoed with the roars of engines and cheering crowds has been transformed into a trailer park, marking a significant change in its use and character.
