N.Y. House Chinese Restaurant & Market

N.Y. House Chinese Restaurant & Market

New York House, which opened late 2003, was a Chinese restaurant, small Asian grocery, sometime art gallery, and occasional music venue located in downtown Muncie. It opened at a tough time for downtown, the 8th restaurant in the spot in eight years, and offered very affordable and plentiful portions. The owner, Chao Zhang, was from Shanghai, and headed several business ventures throughout the years.

Zhang was regarded as very friendly and was what made NY House beloved. The only exterior signage at NY House was hand-cut letters of paper taped to the window facing Washington Street. NY House closed in either late 2006 or early 2007. The space was occupied by Morton’s Irish Pub, then Savage's Ale House, which opened in September 2009 and is still a popular downtown spot.
